13th Summer Jazz Festival in Piwnica Pod Baranami
02.08.2008

Event description
The saxophone is the jazz instrument, as far as I’m concerned there is no other jazz instrument”. These words were spoken by Branford Marsalis, the major star of the Summer Jazz Festival and of the evening dedicated to saxophonists. He was born in Louisiana, to a large family of a bop pianist, composer and teacher. Together with two of his brothers, he followed in his father’s footsteps and started playing a musical instrument. Thanks to Branford and Wynton, the Marsalis family name is known all around the world, mainly because of them cooperating with such artists as Sting or Herbie Hancock. It all began from performances with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (the 80s). Miles Davis learned about the talented brothers and quickly invited Branford to work with him. In the world of jazz musicians it equalled being anointed as a future star. At the Friday inaugural concert we’ll also see other musicians connected to the American stage, Lee Konitz and Greg Osby.

In the rich programme of the club concerts, two evenings seem particularly interesting. On 18 July, the French from Bertrand Ravalard Quartet will try the music of Andrzej Trzaskowski and Krzysztof Komeda, two giants of Polish jazz. On 20 July – a cosy concert of the Christoph Pepe Auer/Manu Delago duo. The latter of the two belongs to the virtuosi of Hang, a percussion instrument, which was invented only eight years ago and combines both melodic and rhythmic qualities. A separate article on the “Jazz Night” (19/20 July) is in the “Music” section.
