New Year’s Eve on Krakow’s Main Square
31.12.2008

Event description
Leona Lewis, Kate Ryan, Kasia Kowalska, Tatiana Okupnik, Natalia Kukulska – beautiful female singers all in one place on a winter evening... Such a treat is only possible in the heart of Krakow.

New Year’s Eve parties on the Main Square have brought together crowds of locals and tourists for many years, as welcoming the New Year here is always quite a show. Several thousand revellers, a riot of colours, an impressive firework display right after midnight – put briefly, a terrific party until dawn, in the company of irresistible pop stars.

This time, the party will be headlined by charming female singers. Leona Lewis - unchallenged queen of world top charts to crown the 2008 New Year’s Eve Party! Her debut single released in December 2006 broke the world record of the time, being downloaded from the Internet 50.000 times within barely half an hour! Its follow-up, “Bleeding Love”, became the best-selling single in Great Britain in 2007, while her first full album, “Spirit”, which came out in early November 2007, went on to become the best-selling record in Great Britain as well as in Ireland, hitting the very top of Billboard 200. In Poland and in other European countries, the CD was released at the beginning of this year, also selling exceptionally well and confirming the singer’s great musical class appreciated not only by her fans, but also by the industry. It was Leona Lewis who performed Led Zepellin’s “Whole Lotta Love” alongside Jimmy Page at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Kate Ryan (in fact Katrien Verbeeck), called a “Dance Queen”, is a 28-year-old Belgian artist who immersed herself fully in the world of music in 2000, when she started working with Phil Wild and Andy Janssens, producer and author of the hits of 2Unlimited. This paved the way for her “Different” album, including two covers of songs by the French star Mylène Farmer: “Désenchantée” and “Libertine”. It is mainly thanks to these hits that the young singer immediately became recognized all over Europe. Kate Ryan kept up the momentum and more hits followed: “The Promise You Made” by Cock Robin (“La Promesse” in the French language version), “Voyage Voyage” by Desirelles, and “Ella, elle l'a” by France Gall. These unforgettable smash hits, interpreted anew, are bound to keep the audience warm through the night.

But Polish artists, represented by Tatiana Okupnik, Natalia Kukulska and Kasia Kowalska, promoting her latest album, will also have an opportunity to take over the stage.
It is worth adding that the event organisers from the Krakow Festival Office have not revealed all the aces hidden up their sleeve yet: it is rumoured that another world-famous star will also perform during the 2008 New Year Party.

This year, the stage will be put up on the eastern side of the Main Square, between the Sukiennice and St. Adalbert’s Church. In the western part, in front of the Town Hall Tower, a large screen will transmit the concert live for those who will not be able to get near the real stage.

Champagne, women and song… Happy New Year! (AJ)
